Thanksgiving Weekend in Hudson, New York

Posted on Thu,Nov 24, 2022Sat,Nov 26, 2022 by Trixie Starr

Hi Hudson,

Yes, this newsletter is out a little later than usual. There is no Farmers’ Market today, so you would think I’d have more time to put this together, sooner. Nope.

I’m surprised you even opened this email. I’ve received so many emails this weekend – from every company’s online shopping cart I ever visited!

Come visit me at Back Bar during Winter Walk!

I will be at Back Bar, 347 Warren Street, during Winter Walk, Saturday, December 3rd between 5-8pm. Come and take an instant photo with me for $5.
Ophelia Nightly will be singing carols and a half-Jewish elf will take your picture.

We put the instant photo in a holiday card. It’s something real and tangible.

When you are sitting in a bomb shelter after the apocalypse, and you’re unable to access your iphotos from the cloud, you can look at that $5 instant picture we handed you at Winter Walk 2022. It’ll be us – me, in drag (kinda), surly, burly, and annoyed, and you.

That instamax Winter Walk photo may be the only photo of yourself that you printed – and I’ll be with you! In the JL Edwards bomb shelter, you’ll open up yet another can of vegetables, or beans for dinner. You’ll look at the photo and think – “Gee, those were fun times; I guess I was happy. I didn’t realize how good I had it.”

You’ll take another spoonful from the can of government-rationed creamed corn and reflect.

Happy Holidays!

Unitard performers at Hudson Hall
Mike Albo, Nora Burns, David Ilku

Unitard was at Hudson Hall last weekend doing sketch comedy. One sketch, “My House Upstate”, satirized New York City-ers moving upstate, and doing things such as building a barn of 1840s reclaimed wood from the 1840s barn on their property.

Hudson Hall was full! It was the usual gaggle of post-New York City gay-ish homosexuals from the Hudson Valley – we all know each other (sometimes, the biblical ‘know’) – former gogo dancers, a half dozen they-used-to-ACT UP-ers, Hillsdalian lesbians, and gay-adjacent heterosexuals who, I wondered, ‘Did they get all the jokes and references in the show? Does it matter?’

David Ilku, Nora Burns, Mike Albo

Well, I think I’ll stop here. That’s enough.

Have a great weekend! Shop small.

Trix

Chasing Icebergs: Art and a Disappearing Landscape

Kambui Olujimi, Blue Ebb

Did you know that Frederic Church did a series of paintings and sketches on glaciers, after his visit to Newfoundland in 1859? I had no idea. Chasing and photographing icebergs was a thing, I guess, but, this was also before the Titanic.

In 1917, Church’s relatives donated much of the artwork, stored in the attic of Olana, to the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. Some of the artwork is back at Olana and on view. Today, with climate crisis issues, Chasing Icebergs is a timely exhibit.

The North

Church tried to sell his artwork right before the Civil War. He renamed this piece, above, “The North”. He later added the ship’s mast and sold the painting in Britain, in honor of the British explorer who perished while exploring the Arctic. I learned all of this on the tour, which I recommend. You never know what you’ll find out!

The exhibit starts this weekend, on Sunday. Take the house tour and check out the exhibition at the same time. Church’s Chasing Icebergs is a combination of Church’s work as well as contemporary artists, such as Hudson-based photographer, Lynn Davis. You can listen to Davis’ interview on WAMC here.

Winter Walk “Chilly” Dinner

Elena Mosley
Ellen Thurston

Hudson Hall celebrates the 26th Anniversary of Winter Walk on Saturday, December 3, with the return of a post-fireworks chili dinner in honor of the naming of long-time board members Elena Mosley and Ellen Thurston to Board Members Emeritae.

The Kinderhooker and I have “bromance”.

I spent about three and a half hours in Kinderhook, including Queer Soup night, and wrote about it here. The anonymous meme account, TheKinderhookers, added their memes. I aspire to keep this blog family-friendly, but, it does not always work out that way. The story is a fun read; at least I think so.

Friday night in Kinderhook

Hudson Hall announces their list of performers for Winter Walk.
Read the list here.

I’m on the list, as Ms. Trixolina Marie Clauzone, Santa’s Italian-American jilted ex-wife.
It’s a real stretch for me.
Come and visit me at Back Bar during Winter Walk!

I’m selling these tote bags at the Hudson Farmers’ Market. $10. All of the money goes into the Hudson Conservation Advisory Council’s Tree Fund for more street trees in Hudson.

If you would like to be on the list for a City of Hudson Street Tree, then click here.
