ON LIGHTNESS: JUDAH CATALAN AND DIANE TOWNSEND and OFF THE WALL: MARGARET SALISKE, JEAN FEINBERG, AND PAMELA J. WALLACE

Hudson Hall invites viewers to leave their expectations behind and experience two exhibitions of Hudson Valley artists that challenge pre-conceived notions of space and perspective. In “Off the Wall,” on view in the Center Hall Gallery, Margaret SaliskeJean Feinberg, and Pamela Wallace explore the notion of the gallery wall as both support element and active participant using various media, palettes, forms, and textures. Hudson-based artists Judah Catalan and Diane Townsend invite viewers to step into a visual kinetic experience with “On Lightness,” which hangs in the Common Council Room. The exhibitions will be on view from October 23 to December 5, 2021.

“Art and culture have always been both a respite from and a reflection of challenging times. With this exquisite showcase of Hudson Valley talent, we offer our community an opportunity to shake off the burden of the 24-hour news cycle and experience art in the present moment – and the sensations, thoughts, or expression it inspires,” says Tambra Dillon, Executive Director of Hudson Hall.

ON LIGHTNESS

In his recent work, Israeli-born Judah Catalan explores line and three-dimensional space using wire and paint; the works interact with a room’s ever-changing light and air movement. He studied painting with Franz Bernheimer and attended the School of Visual Arts. Catalan, a Hudson resident, has exhibited at the Horace Brookington Gallery, Forum Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, England, and Callicoon Fine Arts.

Hudson-based artist Diane Townsend presents her artwork as places to enter, absorb, and contemplate, with each viewing shifting according to that moment’s context. She has a BFA from Indiana University and an MFA from Queens College, City University of New York. She has taught at Brown University, Art Institute of Chicago, SUNY Purchase, Parsons School of Design, and more. Her work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Prince Street Gallery, Huntington Museum, and Mercer Gallery, among many others.

OFF THE WALL

Based in Taghkanic, NY, Jean Feinberg has exhibited her work at Rosa Esman Gallery, Victoria Munroe Gallery, John Davis Gallery (Hudson), Weatherspoon Art Museum, National Academy Museum, and Milwaukee Museum of Fine Arts, among many others. Working primarily in non-objective and minimal genres, each work’s shape and color tell a unique story. Feinberg earned her BA from Skidmore College and her MA from Hunter College. She has received National Endowment for the Arts grants, as well as Yaddo, MacDowell, and Edward Albee Foundation residencies. She has taught and lectured about her work at many institutions, including Parsons School of Design, Princeton University, Art Institute of Chicago, RISD, Brown University, and Bard’s Milton Avery Graduate School of Art.

Margaret Saliske lived and worked in New York City until moving to the Hudson Valley in 1989. She earned a BA from Bennington College and attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program in studio art. In 2018, she received an Apexart fellowship in Seoul, South Korea, and in 2019 she was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. She exhibited at Artists Space and 55 Mercer Street Gallery in New York City before moving upstate, where she has shown her work at numerous area galleries including Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson. Her work was chosen for the 2021 Artists of the Mohawk Region exhibition at Opalka Gallery. She lives and works in Hudson, a place that often inspires and manifests itself in her artwork

Pamela J. Wallace, a sculptor with welding and blacksmith skills who also works with paper, ceramics, and clay, received her BA from Bard College and her MFA from Southern Illinois University. She has shown her work at the John Davis Gallery, which represents her work; Opus 40; University Art Museum, Albany; and the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, among many others. Her work is in many collections, including Southern Illinois University, Bemidji State University, John A. Logan College Museum and Art Galleries, and Northeast Normal University in Changchun Jilin, China. She teaches at Bard College in the Bard Prison Initiative.
