You may know him from around town. Victor Meyers has been a lawyer in Hudson for over fifty years. Now you can view his photography exhibit at Verdigris Tea & Chocolate until December 2nd.
The exhibit merges Meyers’ two great passions – photography and travel. Victor’s older brother, Billy gave him his first camera, an old Minolta, over fifty years ago. The film camera was one of the first to have a built-in meter, however, there was no autofocus. When his brother Billy left for college, Victor took over the darkroom in the basement. Victor married his wife, Flo, in 1970, and the two set out to travel the world. The Minolta went with them.
One of their first journeys was a nine-month backpacking expedition from Istanbul to Tokyo. Since then, they visited almost every continent. Over the past fifty years, their destinations included exotic locales such as Iran, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bali. Victor visited Afghanistan about fifty years ago; it felt as if they stepped back hundreds of years in time. They stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul for only $10/day. Meals were a dollar or fifty cents. Many nights, Victor slept with his camera under his pillow for safety.
Victor Meyers and his wife continue to travel today. Their latest adventures included trips to Uzbekistan, Japan, and Turkey. All trips were documented with his camera.
Earlier this year, Kim Bach from Verdigris approached Victor and asked him to display his work at the tea shop. Victor started digitizing countless slides on carrousels. With the help of Mike Molinski, he printed the photos and mounted them. For the first time, the photos are on display and available for purchase.
